What is Marfan syndrome?

The Marfan syndrome is a connective tissue disorder. Connective tissue holds the body together and provides a framework for growth and development. With Marfan syndrome, the connective tissue is defective and can affect many body systems, including the skeleton, eyes, heart and blood vessels, nervous system, skin and lungs.

An estimated 200,000 people may have Marfan syndrome and related connective tissue disorders. Many people affected don't know they have it – or that it even exists. Left untreated, this connective tissue disorder can result in an aortic dissection – the large blood vessel near the heart tears and may even rupture.

While there is no cure, there are effective treatments and if diagnosed early and monitored, people can live a normal life span.
